Do Shopify apps slow down your store?
Yes, many do. Every app that shows on your storefront (reviews, chat, popups, upsells, tracking pixels) adds scripts to each page, and they compete with your product photo. Apps that only work in your Shopify admin add nothing. The fix is rarely deleting apps that earn sales: find the heavy ones and change the order they load in.

Why apps slow a Shopify store down
A storefront app works by adding code to your theme, through an app embed, an app block or a script pasted into the theme. Each shopper's phone has to download it, read it and run it, on the same processor that is drawing your product page. Most Shopify stores run 7 to 13 apps, so it adds up fast.
Adds weight
Apps shoppers see on the storefront
- Reviews and star ratings
- Live chat and helpdesk bubbles
- Popups and email sign-up forms
- Upsells, bundles and recommendations
- Tracking pixels and heatmaps
- Page builders and theme add-ons
Adds nothing
Apps that only work in your admin
- Inventory and stock sync
- Accounting and invoices
- Shipping labels and fulfilment
- Order management and reports
They run in the Shopify admin, so shoppers never download them.
What app code does to your Core Web Vitals
-
LCP Largest Contentful Paint
Good: 2.5 s or less
When the biggest thing on screen, usually the product photo, appears. Scripts that download and run before the photo push it back.
-
INP Interaction to Next Paint
Good: 200 ms or less
How fast the page answers a tap, like choosing a size or adding to cart. A phone busy running app code answers late.
-
CLS Cumulative Layout Shift
Good: 0.1 or less
How much the page jumps while it loads. Review stars, banners and widgets that appear late push the content shoppers were reading.
Google's thresholds, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits in the Chrome UX Report (CrUX), the data PageSpeed Insights and Search Console show.
Which Shopify apps weigh the most
It is not the number of apps that matters most, it is what each one does on the page. These are the kinds that usually cost the most loading time.
-
Reviews
Star ratings on every product card plus a review list with photos. Many load their full script and styles on every page, even pages with no reviews on them.
-
Live chat and helpdesk
A chat bubble usually loads a whole messaging app before anyone opens it. It is often one of the largest scripts on a store, and it is rarely needed in the first seconds.
-
Popups and email capture
They load on every page to decide whether to show, often with their own fonts and images. The popup itself may appear seconds later, but its code is already running.
-
Upsells, bundles and recommendations
Widgets near the buy button fetch products and draw themselves after the page has loaded, which can move the price and the button as shoppers reach for them.
-
Tracking pixels and analytics
Ad pixels, analytics, heatmaps and session recorders each run a script on every page. Shoppers never see them, so there is no reason for them to load before the product.
-
Page builders and theme add-ons
Sections built with a page-builder app can bring a library and stylesheet of their own. Small extras (currency switchers, size charts, trust badges, wishlists) are light one by one, but they add up.
How to find which app is slowing your store
All free, and none of it needs a developer until you delete code.
-
Test a product page in PageSpeed Insights
Product pages carry the most apps, so test one, not only the homepage. Read the real-visit data at the top first, then open “Reduce unused JavaScript” and “Reduce the impact of third-party code”: both list scripts by domain, and most apps are named in theirs.
-
Sort the Network panel by domain
In Chrome, open DevTools on a product page, choose Network, tick “Disable cache” and reload. Sort by size, or by domain: anything that is not your store or Shopify is almost always an app or a pixel.
-
Check Coverage for unused code
In DevTools, open the Coverage panel from the command menu and reload. It shows how much of each script the page never used. A reviews script loading in full on a page with no reviews is an easy win.
-
Open your theme's app embeds
In Shopify, go to Online Store, Themes, Customize, then App embeds. Every embed that is switched on loads on every page. Switch off the ones for apps you no longer use.
-
Look for code left by old apps
Apps built on Shopify's theme app extensions leave with the app. Older apps that edited theme files can leave snippets and script tags behind, which keep loading after the uninstall. Search your theme code for the app's name, and ask its developer or yours before deleting anything.
-
Change one thing, then test again
Duplicate your theme, switch off one app embed in the copy and compare the preview in Lighthouse. Run each test a few times: lab scores move from run to run, and the real-visit data takes about 28 days to catch up.
Remove the app, or keep it?
Deleting apps is the usual advice, and for apps you do not use it is right. But most storefront apps are there because they earn something. Remove one that sells and you swap a speed problem for a sales problem.
Remove it when
- You no longer use it, or it was a test you forgot
- Two apps do the same job (two review apps, two popup tools)
- It loads on every page but works on one
- Nobody can say what it earns
Keep it when
- Reviews give shoppers the trust to buy
- Popups grow the email list you sell to later
- Chat answers the question that stops a sale
- Upsells raise the order value; pixels feed your ads
For the apps you keep, the cost is mostly when they load, not that they load. A chat bubble nobody opens in the first few seconds does not need to arrive before the product photo.
Shopify app speed checklist
- List every app in Settings, Apps and sales channels, and mark each one storefront or admin-only.
- Uninstall the apps you no longer use, then check the theme for code they left.
- Switch off the theme app embeds you do not need.
- Keep one app per job: one reviews app, one popup tool, one chat.
- Where an app lets you, show it only on the pages that need it.
- Test product and collection pages on a phone, not only the homepage.
- Judge by real-visit data (PageSpeed Insights, or Search Console's Core Web Vitals report), not one lab score.
- Test again after every new app you install.
- Let what shoppers see load first and everything else after.
How Whoosh helps: keep every app, change the order
Whoosh is a Shopify app that does the last line of the checklist for you. It needs no code and no theme edits, and it leaves checkout and account pages alone. Each store starts on a 50/50 test, half the shoppers with Whoosh and half without, so you see what it changed in your own numbers.
-
Smart App Loading
Keep every app, change the order
Loads the apps shoppers see first and makes chat, trackers, review tools and popups wait until the product photo is on screen. They all still load.
-
AI Page Preloading
The next page is ready before the tap
Predicts the page a shopper is likely to open next and loads it in the background, so moving through the store feels instant.
-
Free Speed Audit
See where your store stands
Run the free speed audit on your own store before you change anything, so you have a baseline to compare against.

How you see it worked
On your own store, with your own shoppers. Every store starts on a 50/50 test for its first few weeks, about a month: half your shoppers get Whoosh and half do not. Once the result is clear, it moves to 90/10, keeping 10% of shoppers as a control group so the lift stays measured.
Your dashboard compares conversion and revenue between the groups. The difference is the revenue Whoosh recovers.

Shopify apps and speed: questions
Do Shopify apps slow down my store?
Many do. Apps that show something on your storefront (reviews, chat, popups, upsells, tracking pixels) add scripts to every page, and those scripts compete with your product photo for the shopper's phone. Apps that only work in your Shopify admin, like inventory or accounting apps, add nothing to the storefront.
How many apps is too many on Shopify?
There is no safe number. Most Shopify stores run 7 to 13 apps, and one heavy chat or reviews app can cost more than several light ones. What matters is what each app loads on the storefront, on which pages, and when.
How do I find which app is slowing my Shopify store?
Test a product page in PageSpeed Insights and open “Reduce unused JavaScript” and “Reduce the impact of third-party code”, which list scripts by domain. Then use the Network and Coverage panels in Chrome DevTools, and check the app embeds in your theme editor. Code left in the theme by apps you uninstalled is a common culprit too.
Does uninstalling a Shopify app make my store faster?
Usually, if the app loaded on the storefront. Apps built on Shopify's theme app extensions are removed with the app. Older apps that edited your theme files can leave code behind that keeps loading, so search the theme for the app's name after you uninstall it.
Should I delete apps to speed up my Shopify store?
Delete the ones you no longer use. Think twice about the ones that earn money: reviews, popups, chat and upsells are often there because they sell. Removing them trades one loss for another. Changing when they load keeps what they earn and gives shoppers the product first.
Do apps affect my Core Web Vitals and SEO?
They can. App scripts that run before the product photo push back Largest Contentful Paint, scripts busy when a shopper taps slow Interaction to Next Paint, and widgets that appear late cause layout shift. Google measures all three from real Chrome visits, at the 75th percentile, and reads them as part of page experience.
Will Whoosh remove or change my apps?
No. Whoosh keeps every app you have. Smart App Loading changes when each one loads, not what it does, with no code and no theme edits. It leaves checkout and account pages alone.
